Appearance: Sel Sang looks more or less like most other Kel Dor, if not a bit more wiry than average, with a red-rust complexion. The most noticeable thing, to those who see it (which, given the constant presence of his antiox goggles, is mostly only other Kel Dor), is his bright silver irises, a mark which other Kel Dor have recognized for a long time as a mark of capability in the Force.
Personality: Sel believes absolutely in the idea of justice, and in good - when the law is good, it helps people, and should be followed, regardless of circumstance. He is, however, more sensitive to justice than even most Kel Dor - where some Kel Dor might see a lawful hand in the Empire's making, he sees abuse of true justice and a petty masquerade. He usually acts thoughtfully, but his decisions can be (and often are) rushed, especially where he's personally offended by something. He believes in and understands the Force passingly well, but he is at least smart enough not to be blatant about it. If there's one thing that irritates Sel, though, it's the idea of doing nothing - if he can act in any way to improve a situation he absolutely will, something which has set him at odds with his mentors among the Baran Do and gotten him into a fair amount of trouble.
Background: Born to one of the old families of Dorin, Sel was aware from a very young age of the Baran Do, believed by many of the less historic families to be simply a small group of eccentric wizards. He was told many times that they would be his teachers when he grew older, and even grew close to one, Ban Roon, who would stop by to associate with his father, Noh Sang. Curious, decisive, and fast-moving, Sel spent most of his younger years exploring and getting into just about anything he could find, and even learned how to handle an old hunting rifle from an early age, a keepsake of one of his family's ancestors. Things were going well, and young Sang had a good life - his eyes made him someone special, and he expected to learn many great magical powers when the Baran Do finally took him as a student.
The day came when he was nine. Worlds away, the Jedi had been struck down in droves, and though no real news had come yet, the Baran Do knew as they always did. One of them came to him and told him that they would be taking him to teach him. By the time the first Imperial purges hit Dorin, Sel was already hidden away with the Baran Do, who managed to evade the detection of the Imperials by and large.
Sel had been expecting their lessons, and he approached them eagerly at first. What he hadn't known, then, was the isolation and the inability to act. Though at first he approached the lessons eagerly, learning both of the planet Dorin's wonders and of the wonders of the Force, as he saw more he became keenly aware of the Empire's injustices.
The Empire was methodically purging those Force Sensitives they could find, and the Baran Do would do nothing but occasionally bring a child to be trained. They claimed to be working on the will of the Force, but at the time, even with his awareness of the Force, Sel could see no justice in it. But even though he wanted to take a more active role against the Empire, the Baran Do said wait, and he stayed behind, obeying the will of the sages at least this far, out of respect for their teachings and his old friend Ban Roon.
It was, of course, only natural then that he'd be spurred to action when fate's cruel streak made yet another appearance. Finally convinced by one of Sel's impassioned arguments, Ban Roon went along with Sel's plan to rescue an aristocratic child the other Baran Do had considered too risky to act upon. Sure enough, the family had been under close watch by the Empire, and when Sel and Ban finally acted, they were quickly detected. In the end it was, ironically, Sel who was unable to act, only able to flee alongside the younger boy while Ban put up a heroic defense, protecting Sel's life. Sel and the boy they had come to save made it safely back to the Baran Do, who knew without being told the fate of their reckless fellow sage.
This was, of course, the last thing Sel needed to hear. Having lost his last true tie to the organization, understanding that they had always known that this would be Ban's fate, and that they had allowed him to sacrifice his life for this child, and that they still refused to act or even acknowledge that it was anything less than an expected act, Sel finally left them. Even the thankful child was rebuffed with a few harsh words, blamed for the loss of his master and for being somehow more important than Ban's life. Sel visited his home in secret one last time, took the rifle he was so familiar with, and struck out on his own, wandering the galaxy and doing what he could to find the Rebellion wherever he could and to aid them in whatever little ways he could offer. He has been wandering for a couple years now, doing his best to strike against the Empire and so far dodging their detection.
