Devas are a race that encourage players to not be creative when making a backstory. Oh wait, wrong game. Is this a reference Im not getting? Please elaborate.

D&D 4E.
The Deva are a race of immortals that, when they die, they're resurrected in a fully mature body in a random place with no real rhyme or reason. Basically, when I read it I thought "Oh good, so now there's legitimate fluff for why players can say 'I just woke up with no knowledge of my past but with completely capable as a hero'"

And here I thought that "born a mutant" was the laziest origin ever.

Nope! With born a mutant, you at least have to come up with your power's manifestation.
Granted, the Deva's can be cool if you have a creative player (a friend of mine has a Deva Bard that lives to create the perfect song, attempting to better it through every reincarnation), but it really just encourages players not to be creative.

Not to mention; the only reason for anyone to ever play an Eladrin was for the Wizard class, and now the Deva is even better at Wizarding than the Eladrin, so unless you've got players that pick non-optimal race/class combinations, the Eladrin is a dead race in 4.0.

Of the 4E races, I generally actively discourage Tieflings and Deva due to their fluff. So many people want to play Tiefling because they "look cool" and it just screams, to me, that they were put in specifically to appeal to the Twilight types. I don't like having that stupid cheese in my D&D, tyvm.

Thats how I feel about the Dragonborn. Nothing robs the mystique of dragons faster than having PCs who ARE dragons.

I've been wondering which roleplaying book I should buy next (I don't have a lot of money, so I can't afford more than one). Should I get Scion, Rogue Trader (the new Warhammer 40K rpg) or another book for Star Wars Saga Edition?

Scion is actually very cool, and would be my recommendation of that group.
Of course, I know nothing of Warhammer, and the problem with Saga Edition Star Wars is that all of the books are so good, I'd be hard pressed to pick one as "the" book to pick up (Starships of the Galaxy is probably the most useful after the core book, IF you want to run space combat)

I'm still sorely tempted to run a small Hunter game. Maybe 3 to 4 people. I'll have to see how this last round of midterms goes next week. ^__^

I might be down if I can figure out as much as I can about Hunter without buying the books...

Hunter is very easy to learn if you have the core WoD book. I could essentially explain everything necessary by a PM. ^__^
I wrote a Hunter game for some local friends, but it never materialized (scheduling turned out to be a nightmare). Anyway, I still have all the material, and considering that I initially planned to run a tabletop game weekly for an entire year, I probably enough for about 3+ years worth of online gaming. lol
